Cold weather and low temperatures can impact battery efficiency and slow down charging performance. In order to heat up the battery pack and sustain a higher rate of charge, vehicles like the Electrified GV70 have been designed with Battery Conditioning Mode.

What Is Battery Conditioning Mode, and How Does It Work?

The Electrified GV70 is equipped with Battery Conditioning Mode, designed to warm the high-voltage battery in cold weather. Cold temperatures can reduce battery efficiency and slow down the rate of charging. Battery Conditioning Mode helps by increasing the battery’s temperature before fast charging takes place, ensuring faster and more efficient charging and improved driving performance in freezing temperatures.

How Does Battery Conditioning Mode Help?

1. Improves Charging Efficiency: When activated, Battery Conditioning Mode prepares the battery for fast charging by warming it up, reducing the time spent on the charger, and improving overall charging speed.
2. Helps Extend Battery Life: Battery Conditioning Mode helps keep the high-capacity battery pack in an optimal temperature range when fast charging begins, assisting with battery life.

How to Enable Battery Conditioning Mode:

To activate Battery Conditioning Mode manually:

1. Press the Home button to start from the home screen.
2. Swipe or turn the central controller knob to the right to bring up the home menu.
3. Select EV.
4. On the top menu bar, select the settings icon, marked with a gear icon.
5. Scroll down and select Battery Conditioning Mode and then “activate.” If conditions are met, Battery Conditioning Mode will turn on.

To activate Battery Conditioning Mode automatically:

1. Press the Home button to start from the home screen.
2. Swipe or turn the central controller knob to the right to bring up the home menu.
3. Select EV.
4. Select the “nearby charger” icon, to the right of the vehicle icon. The “nearby charger” icon is marked with a charging station name, distance, and plug icon.
5. A list of nearby charging stations will appear.
6. Select a charging station that is marked as a fast charger.
7. If navigating to a fast charger, depending on weather temperature and time to destination, Battery Conditioning Mode may activate if the system determines it to be useful.

Battery Conditioning Mode and Range

While Battery Conditioning Mode is a valuable feature for enhancing cold weather battery charging, it's essential to note that it may slightly reduce driving range. This happens because the system uses some of the vehicle’s energy to heat the battery.
