Common Scenarios Explained
The Hands-Free Smart Liftgate is designed to open automatically, but certain conditions affect when and how it activates. Knowing these can help you use the feature more seamlessly and avoid frustration.
● Why does it seem like my Liftgate isn’t working properly? The liftgate function may not operate if the smart key is too far away or shielded, so please ensure the key is within range and unobstructed for optimal performance (e.g., inside a purse or bag when enclosed in RFID protective material).
● Why does the opening feel slow? The delay between detection and opening can cause users to give up and use the manual button.
● How did my Liftgate open unexpectedly? In rare cases, the system activates when not intended, often due to lingering behind the vehicle with the key.
NOTE: It’s important to know that some of these behaviors are intentional. For example, the liftgate opens slowly by design to reduce the risk of injury or contact with nearby objects or people. This is a built-in safety feature—not a flaw.
Now let’s go over a few steps and tips to help you get the most out of your Smart Liftgate. How to Use the Smart Liftgate: Steps and Tips
Here’s how to use your Smart Liftgate so it works when you expect it to—no guessing, no surprises.
- Make sure all doors and the liftgate are closed and locked.
- Carry the smart key with you (not inside the vehicle or blocked by metal).
- Stand still behind the vehicle (about 20–40 inches from the liftgate).
- Remain still for at least 3 seconds.
- A short beep will sound, and the liftgate will open automatically and slowly.
Please Note: Moving during those 3 seconds can interrupt the process. Try to stand still—don’t wave, shift, or step away.
The more you know about how the Smart Liftgate works, the more it will work like it should. These tips can help you use the feature with greater confidence and consistency.
● Keep the smart key accessible, not buried deep in a bag or pocket.
● Avoid crowding the rear of the vehicle with carts, people, or other objects.
● Don’t stand too close or too far. The sweet spot is about 2–3 feet from the liftgate.
● Give it time. Wait for the beep before assuming it didn’t work.
If you’re still having problems with the liftgate not responding well, a quick check of your settings or environment may solve the issue. Here’s what to look for if the system isn’t working as expected.
● Check if the feature is enabled in your vehicle settings:
Go to: Setup > Vehicle > Door/Liftgate > Smart Liftgate and ensure it’s ON.
● Replace the battery in your smart key if it's weak.
● Lock the vehicle again and repeat the process to reset standby mode.
Avoid blocking the sensor area or wearing clothing that interferes with detection.
